Budge Brown has been farming in California for over 50 years. When asked about his educational background (although he is a UC Davis graduate) he will smile and tell you he graduated from the School of Hard Knocks with a degree in Trial and Error and an emphasis in Blood, Sweat and Tears. He and Arlene, his wife, have dreamt of owning a winery for over 45 years. As newlyweds they would drive to the Napa Valley and talk of how someday they would own land there, plant vineyards and produce great wine grapes.

Following the sale of Fetzer Winery in 1992, Jim Fetzer created Ceago Vinegarden. The first Ceago ranch was located in the McNab Valley, Mendocino County, California. In the spring 2001, Jim purchased 270 acres between the villages of Nice and Lucerne on the north shore of Clearlake, Lake County, California. Ceago Del Lago This property, "Ceago Del Lago" is now the focus of intense development efforts, where Jim is creating a biodynamic farm along with a Food and Wine Center.

Located 90 miles north of San Francisco and just over the hills from Calistoga and St. Helena, the Guenoc Valley sits at a high elevation in Southern Lake County, ranging from 700 to 1,200 feet above sea level. The clear, warm days and cool nights favor a number of important grape varieties, and Guenoc’s rocky, alluvial soils combine to set the appellation apart from any other in California.
