Wine Country Regions

California is the fourth largest producer of wine in the world, behind France, Italy, and Spain. Fully 90 percent of all wine produced in the United States comes from here. Almost anywhere you go in California, from Mexico to Oregon and from the Sierra Nevada Mountains to the Pacific Ocean, you will find vineyards and wineries.

While there is much wine country in California, the area of the state distinguished as “the Wine Country” spans only four northern counties. Napa and Sonoma counties are the Wine Country heartland. North of Sonoma County, Mendocino County is another well established wine producing region. To the east of Mendocino and north of Napa counties, Lake County is regaining a reputation for fine wines lost to Prohibition.

WineCountryGuide.com, like its print companion, Spotlight's Wine Country Guide magazine, focuses on these four counties. Begin planning your trip to the Wine Country by clicking on one of the links to the left under Where Do You Want to Go? The Gateways link covers destinations that are on the way to the Wine Country and of interest to Wine Country visitors.

To get the most out of your visit to the Wine Country, be sure to pick up a copy of Spotlight's Wine Country Guide magazine. It's a free, portable companion to this Website filled with easy-to-use maps, complete itineraries, informative articles, and guides to everthing you need to know about the Wine Country. Look for Spotlight's Wine Country Guide at more than 650 locations throughout Northern California including hotels, wineries, and tourism information centers, among many others.
